FAQ
1
Are Slimline aluminium frames strong enough for large glass panels?
Slimline aluminium frames are capable of supporting large glass panels, yet this relies heavily on systematic engineering rather than simply the narrow visual profile. The slim sightline only describes the exposed face of the frame; the structural strength comes from the aluminium wall thickness, internal rib design, cavity layout and supporting hardware.
For oversized glazed panels, adequate aluminium thickness is fundamental. Frames with insufficient gauge will deflect visibly under the dead load of heavy double-glazed units, leading to misaligned seals, sticking sliding hardware and long-term water leakage. Reinforced internal webs or insert stiffeners are often adopted for tall or wide panels to boost rigidity.
Glass weight is another key factor. Large double-glazed lowiron units carry substantial mass. The load must be matched with heavy-duty rollers, hinges and corner cleats, which are rated to safely sustain the total weight with a proper safety margin. Wind load from local weather conditions also needs to be considered, especially for exterior windows and doors.
Poorly designed slim systems with thin profiles cannot handle large glass. Frame bending, sash sagging and premature hardware failure are common risks. When engineered correctly and tested to relevant building standards, slimline aluminium frames deliver both minimalist aesthetics and reliable structural performance for large glass applications.
